Laparoscopic Surgery
Laparoscopic or 'keyhole' surgery is used for the diagnosis or treatment of disease and is an established alternative to laparotomy (an open cut to the stomach) for the treatment of a large number of conditions.
Benefits of laparoscopy over conventional 'open' surgery
Laparoscopic surgery means less discomfort after surgery and a much faster recovery. Indeed, the majority of our patients are fit to go home the same day of surgery or after one overnight stay following their surgery, and their return to work and everyday life is considerably sooner compared to open surgery.
Patients who undergo laparoscopic surgery also have less of a physical stress response to surgery and a reduced incidence of chest complications following their surgery.
Another benefit of laparoscopic surgery over open surgery is the reduced size of the cuts or incisions required – this is reflected in the improved cosmetic effect following the patient′s surgery.
World class expertise
The Endometriosis Clinic is one of a small number of centres in the UK to provide world class laparoscopic surgery for gynaecological disorders for which patients have traditionally required laparotomy with prolonged hospital stays and long recovery times.
Our multi-disciplinary team is led by one of the UK′s most experienced laparoscopic surgeons, Chris Mann, MBChB, BSc (Hons), MD, MRCOG, Consultant Gynaecological Oncologist and Laparoscopic Surgeon.
